Our work in the UK

We’re advocating for cleaner urban transport in cities across the UK, supported by a strong network of partners.

OUR AREAS OF FOCUS

Clean Cities is a bridge between city dwellers and city leaders, creating the conditions for change to happen.

Despite big reductions in other sectors, carbon emissions from transport have remained stubbornly high in the UK for the past thirty years.

This is partly because of expensive public transport and an increasing number of large cars on the roads. The UK also has record levels of diesel vans, which is threatening the government’s ambitious drive towards electrification and net zero.

In the UK, we’re focussing on city policies that:

Reallocate space for people & greenery

Enable more people to walk, wheel and cycle

Improve public transport & shared mobility

Prioritise and promote electric vehicles

OUR CAMPAIGNS AND RESEARCH

Carspreading: when big cars make our cities smaller

Carspreading is taking over our cities. Join our campaign to highlight the growing problem of supersized SUVs.

Pathways to zero-emission freight

We are engaging with various partners on a policy roadmap to reduce freight emissions in London, aiming to transform the city centre into a Zero-Emission Freight Area.

Don’t put the switch to electric vans in reverse

We’re working with businesses to call for more support for electric vans and for the London Congestion Charge exemption to continue beyond this year.

Pedal power: unleashing a cargo revolution

Our Cargo Revolution campaign celebrates the amazing benefits cargo bikes bring to Londoners, and champions the fantastic local businesses that are adopting them.

Campaigning for more cycle storage

If city leaders are serious about helping people jump on a bike and use their cars less, they must make it as easy as possible. Our #ThisIsAwkwad campaign highlights the progress we want to see.

Transforming urban space from grey to green

Our research shows how much we prioritise space for cars over space for people. Manchester city centre is roughly 28% road space, 8% car parks and less than 5% greenspace.
