National and Local Coordinator, Germany

Location: Berlin (hybrid)

Application deadline: Midnight (CEST) on Thursday 27 August

ABOUT US

We are Clean Cities, Europe’s largest network of organisations dedicated to building public support for cleaner and healthier cities by shifting from polluting vehicles to active, shared and electric transport.

We operate as a directed network of 152 organisations across 20 countries to phase out the internal combustion engine through high profile creative campaigns, subgranting, research, strategic collaboration and shared advocacy.

Our people work across Europe: colleagues in Brussels, Rome, Paris, Madrid, London, Warsaw and beyond collaborate with our partner organisations to achieve our mission.

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE

The National and Local Coordinator will mobilise traditional and non-traditional groups/allies on the ground in Germany – with a strong focus on Berlin and the implementation of the new EU Ambient Air Quality Directive – and will play a crucial role in the planning and implementation of the campaign on the ground and will act as the link to the European core team.

You will contribute to the overarching campaign goal of creating zero-emission urban mobility systems by the 2030s and securing transport policies that rapidly curb air pollution. You will be responsible for working collaboratively with local groups to help realise our vision and to deliver on the campaign’s objectives. You will also curate and strengthen a vibrant community and help organisations and citizens to remain aligned in their activities and messaging. You will actively contribute to the strategic development of the campaign and will be leading the detailed planning of outputs.

YOUR TASKS WILL INCLUDE

Campaign management

  • Collaborating with the Clean Cities and wider Transport & Environment (T&E) teams, as well as partners, allies and consultants to deliver on the campaign’s objectives.
  • Developing and delivering campaign strategies and tactics and tailor these approaches for a successful implementation in Germany.
  • Using strategic tools and campaigning expertise to generate public support and political momentum, ensuring Berlin’s transport policies meet the new EU Ambient Air Quality Directive.

Partner & Network Coordination

  • Acting as the lead representative for Clean Cities in Germany, you will oversee a coalition of partners, supporting them to align on objectives and ensuring they are empowered to contribute to the mission of Clean Cities in accordance with their core strengths.
  • Strengthening the existing Clean Cities coalition in Germany by establishing direct presence in the country for the first time and fostering key relationships with relevant policymakers, charities, unusual partners (e.g. parents associations) and other allies at a city level.

Strategic Communications

  • Communicating skillfully with government and elected officials, as well as other policymakers and their staff – at the city and national levels – to support the campaign.
  • Serving as campaign spokesperson in Germany and representing Clean Cities at meetings, conferences, and events.
  • Contributing to and/or producing a variety of external communication materials, including blogs, articles, speeches, and social media posts, in close collaboration with communications staff and leadership.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in project coordination and/or environmental advocacy. You have an enthusiasm and passion for campaigning and for sustainable mobility, and the ability to inspire others.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing diverse coalitions and facilitating consensus building among organizations with different priorities, uniting a range of stakeholders from businesses to health professionals.
  • A proven track record with employing campaigning techniques to engage a variety of audiences, including press and media engagement, digital mobilization and events.
  • Experience in legislative advocacy and a solid understanding of German political and decision-making processes at local and national levels.
  • Proven knowledge of the political, NGO and grassroots landscape in Germany, and specifically Berlin, and are well aware of the most relevant challenges and potential solutions regarding urban mobility.
  • Experience in project budgeting, grant reporting and monitoring & evaluation (M&E) of campaign activities.
  • Self-awareness, confidence and creativity with a willingness to try new things and innovate while maintaining our core work.
  • You have a commitment to the values of equity, authentic communication and collaboration.
  • You are a team player and have strong leadership skills.
  • You have native-speaker level proficiency in German and are comfortable working in English.
