Communications and Community Engagement Manager, CEE

Location: Home-based (in a CEE country)

Application deadline: Midnight (CEST) on Thursday 27 August

ABOUT US

We are Clean Cities, Europe’s largest network of organisations dedicated to building public support for cleaner and healthier cities by shifting from polluting vehicles to active, shared and electric transport.

We operate as a directed network of 152 organisations across 20 countries to phase out the internal combustion engine through high profile creative campaigns, subgranting, research, strategic collaboration and shared advocacy.

Our people work across Europe: colleagues in Brussels, Rome, Paris, Madrid, London, Warsaw and beyond collaborate with our partner organisations to achieve our mission.

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE

We are looking to hire an experienced Communication and Community Engagement Manager to drive the expansion of our presence in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), with a focus on Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria. In collaboration with the CEE Head of Campaign, the role will:

  • Implement the delivery of an exciting 1.5 year campaign focussing on road transport, in line with the European Union’s 2024 Ambient Air Quality Directive (AAQD),
  • Strengthen our network of environmental, health, and grassroots organisations in the region; and,
  • Lead our communications strategy to achieve tangible local impact.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and entrepreneurial individual who wants to be part of a great team at the forefront of building cleaner, healthier, and more liveable cities.

YOUR TASKS WILL INCLUDE

Leading Communications and Digital Engagement

  • Taking ownership of the delivery of the communications strategy and bringing creative, fresh perspectives that engage wider audiences and proactively challenge the status quo.
  • Managing the delivery of digital content and social media, monitoring the performance of outputs and aligning with the wider Clean Cities and T&E teams to deliver an editorial calendar.
  • Leading engagement with journalists and the press, including drafting press releases, organising press events, and maintaining a robust, up-to-date press database.
  • Representing the campaign externally at events, meetings, and in the media as a campaign spokesperson for the region.

Executing Events and Public Engagement Activity

  • Organising and executing high-impact events, including ‘activation days’, stakeholder meetings, public debates, and trade shows, tailored to diverse audiences, including partner organisations, local and national policymakers and parent groups, managing them from initial conception to successful delivery.
  • Strategically integrating events with digital communication efforts, translating physical activations into momentum for social media channels and newsletters to maintain long-term audience engagement.

Mobilising and Engaging Stakeholders

  • Acting as the regional representative for Clean Cities, providing strategic oversight to our coalition of partners. You will champion shared campaign goals, ensuring partners are aligned and effectively empowered to leverage their core strengths.
  • Identifying and mobilising a diverse ecosystem of stakeholders, from traditional environmental NGOs, grassroots movements and non-traditional allies (e.g. parents or businesses), to build a robust network that effectively amplified our campaign’s impact across the region.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • A minimum of 3-years experience in project coordination, communications and/or environmental advocacy. You have an enthusiasm and passion for advocating and for sustainable mobility, and ability to inspire others.
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to translate complex public policy issues for diverse audiences, including the general public, parents, and decision-makers.
  • Track record in event organisation or citizen mobilisation, with a demonstrated ability to manage logistics and stakeholder engagement.
  • A proven ability to cultivate contacts and build lasting alliances leading to tangible results. Great networking skills are a must.
  • Proven knowledge of the political, NGO and grassroots landscape in the CEE, and specifically in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, and are well aware of the most relevant challenges and potential solutions regarding urban mobility.
  • Self-awareness, confidence and creativity with a willingness to try new things and innovate while maintaining our core work.
  • You have a commitment to the values of equity, authentic communication and collaboration.
  • You are a team player and have leadership skills.
  • Fluency in English is essential; additional regional languages (Hungarian, Romanian, Bulgarian) are a plus.
  • You are knowledgeable in dealing with group dynamics and have a passion for working with an international and multicultural team.
  • You are flexible and ready to work in the evening when necessary, and to travel for work purposes.
